'“I'm a man of contradictions, I'm a man of many moods. I contain multitudes.” - Bob Dylan
I contain a multitude of parts, and you do, too. Those parts that we all have are so hard to find, let alone know. I've spent a long time hanging out with the crowd of people inside of me in therapy and in my own study of Internal Family Systems (IFS). This treatment modality posits that every person has a system inside of them of wounded and protective parts, and at the heart of everyone is a core Self.
I have found the 3-year-old who knew safety and love nestled in her nana's bosom. The 6-year-old who got hurt by someone she trusted and the 12-year-old who experienced death for the first time. There is the 14-year-old who was the target of the sadism of her peers. The 20-year-old who studied abroad and found a portal to a new world. I've come to understand and have compassion for them all and many more ages and versions of me.
All those times in my life and who I was in each influenced my core Self. When I didn't know them, or worse, tried to shut them down and silence them, I didn't understand my reactions to things, the anger, sadness, and mistrust. As I sat and chatted with each version of myself, I started to see the strength and love and sometimes hateful things those parts represent.
At age 41, I finally understood my parts and accepted them for what they were. Now, I get to be a whole person, and even when I don't like her, even when she is too full of contradictions, and her moodiness can become tiresome, I still love her.
